How does learning look in Bay of Islands College.
I will definitely say that Collaborative Learning happens most of the time. Most of our students excellerate in learning with groups and I realised that getting them to work online collaboratively in pairs also works fine.
We set up teacher sites with Google Sites where we will direct all learning. Saying that, lately some of the staff started to use Spaces in Hapara to direct all learning. BOIC bought the full Hapara suite that gives teachers a lot of control over the students Chromebooks and their work, current screens and drive. During the Covid19 Lockdown BOIC was ready to go from day one. Most of the problems we experienced were on the students side.
Technical difficulties were no electricity, no internet connection or no device. Personal problems were lack of motivation, time keeping and overcrowding.
Things that stood out today.
Our first session of the day was conducted by Kerry where she went in depth into the Manaiakalani's Pedagogy of "Learn, Create Share" After the teacher becomes fluened as a digital teacher it is very important to move into the level of Turbocharging their effective practices. The main point is that every child will engage every day with learning and the other class activities.
After that we dived into "Meet" with Gerhard that covered it also in depth. Dorothy shared "Google Keep" with us and showed all the different ways that you could apply "Keep" in your professional live as well as your personal one.
Setting up your Gmail and how to use tabs and filters were also very informative. Adding signatures to your email was also great. The other useful option in Gmail is you can set up a "Meet" from your email. Managing your workflow with Calendar was also an added blessing of the day. Gerhard showed us also how to tame your Tabs.
One of the new skills that I learned today is how to embed a video into our blog. Here is a my music video I shared with my group.
Hi Chris
ReplyDeleteI know a lot of teachers at Bay of Islands College are finding Hapara workspaces excellent for assessment submission and marking. They are also really good at organising topics and can of course be embedded in your class site, bit of a win win there.
You will have seen some changes over the years from the different schools you've worked in. How do New Zealand schools compare with those you taught in overseas in terms of the learning aspect?
It's great to have you with us on the DFI, your previous experience adds to some rich sharing amongst our group ;)
Thanks for visiting my blog. As you know I have an interest in ICT and I am really glad that BOIC is moving into this direction. The DFI course is great and I enjoy our online workshops a lot. I will suggest that we need to try and keep some of the sessions always online even after Covid 19 lock down. I am glad to be part of this and all the presenters are doing an awesome job.
